Marshall Football Falls To Coastal Carolina, 27-21

Price scores 1st two TDs of career in second half of loss

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Football dropped a 27-7 loss to Coastal Carolina in front of 23,029 fans at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

With the loss, Marshall falls to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt Conference play.

"I'm very disappointed – especially offensively," Marshall head coach Tony Gibson said. "We turned it over six times and had no juice, no energy on offense. We're proud of the way our kids kept fighting. Nobody gave up and they fought to the end, but again, that's not good enough. We should've never been in the spot we were in."

Marshall fell behind 27-0 after a pair of quick Coastal Carolina touchdowns to begin the second half after a big play on the first play of the second half and a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

From there, the Herd rallied behind the play of quarterbacks Zion Turner and Khalil Wilkins and running back Judah Price, who scored the first two touchdowns of his career in the contest.

Price's first collegiate touchdown came on a 50-yard TD run through the middle of the field with 2:46 left in the third quarter that also made him the Herd's first 100-yard rusher of the season.

For the game, Price finished with 124 yards on 12 carries and a score while adding two receptions and another touchdown.

With Marshall trailing 27-7 and under three minutes left, Turner found Price for a 9-yard score with 2:52 left before the Herd recovered an onside kick and Turner found Owen Sweeney for a 19-yard touchdown in which Sweeney broke a tackle and raced into the end zone.

On a tough night offensively, Price said the Herd's resilience through adversity is something they want to take with them moving forward.

"I'm going to keep going as long as it takes," Price said. "That's the kind of guy I am. I'm going to fight for this team, I'm going to fight for this program and I'm going to fight for my guys. Those are my brothers in there."

However, the comeback fell short as Coastal Carolina recovered another onside kick attempt to escape with the win.

Turner finished 18 of 27 for 219 yards with two touchdowns while Wilkins completed a pass for 28 yards and also rushed for 45 yards on seven carries.

Marshall's four first-half turnovers put the team in a bad position, but the Herd defense responded with stops to keep the deficit at 13-0 at the half.

"I was proud of our defense. I thought they fought to keep us in the game," Gibson said. "We had four turnovers in the first half and we only went in down at halftime 13-0. They made big strides this week."

The Herd defense limited electric Coastal Carolina quarterback Deuce Bailey to only 8 of 18 passing for 73 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Javae Gilmore finished with 10 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, while also registering a tip on the interception and a blocked field goal in the loss. Caleb Clark-Glover had seven tackles and the interception off the deflection by Gilmore.

Marshall returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, against South Alabama in a nationally-televised contest shown by ESPN2. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:30 p.m.
