GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Marshall Men's Soccer Team (5-2-4) registered a key 5-1 win on the road Tuesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina, over UNCG.
The Herd handed the Spartans its first home loss of the season with the five goals marking the most in a road match since a 6-1 win at No. 21 James Madison on August 26, 2021.
"Big road win tonight against a good team that's very well organized," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "I was very proud of the lads tonight. We've been talking this week about having to raise our game, and they certainly did that tonight. It was just what we needed. I thought we create a ton of chances again, but this time got the reward for it, as our finishing was much improved. We will try to keep this feeling going, and I know we're willing to fight hard so we don't let it slip away."
The Herd opened the scoring 10:25 into the contest. Ramado Pierre-Louis sent a cross into Carl Romberg, who slotted home the goal past Spartan goalkeeper Seth Wilson. Romberg's tally marked his fourth of the season tying Joshua Nugent for the team lead.
UNCG equalized in the 33rd minute on a goal from Caleb Borneo. However, in the waning seconds of the half, Joao Roberto raced down the right wing, cut inside and fired a left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box past Wilson to give MU a 2-1 advantage into halftime on his first of the season.
After UNCG went down a man with a red card in the 57th minute, Alvaro Alvarez recorded his first goal of the season by taking advantage of a mistimed clearance at the 65:19 mark to make it 3-1.
The Herd continued to pile it on as Pierre-Louis sent a pass across the top of the 18-yard box. Romberg let go between his legs to Nikita Pahkomov. Pahkomov smashed it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season and second in as many games to extend the lead to 4-1 in the 82nd minute.
The five-goal night for the Herd was capped off in the 87th minute as a Romberg pass found Pierre-Louis inside the box for Pierre-Louis to find the back corner of the goal for his first of the season.
Marshall was outshot 10-9 by UNCG, but bested the home side 7-4 in shots on goal. Alan Horrocks registered his second win of the season with three saves made in the match.
