HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Women's Basketball (2-0) captured a 62-45 victory against the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Friday night in the team's home opener in the Cam Henderson Center.
"Sometimes you have games that you just have to grind out," Herd Women's Basketball Head Coach Juli Fulks said. "We didn't have as much energy as we had at UMass, but that was big travel day. That one took a lot out of us. But I was really proud. I thought there was a lot of good. You know holding them to 15 points in the second half."
Cassie Gallgaher tallied a game-high 17 points on a 6-for-8 shooting night to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Olivia Olson added 13 points and four assists.
After trailing 30-29 at halftime, the Herd opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run on five points from Gallagher to go with a pair of free throws from Ni'Kiah Chesterfield to take a 36-32 lead.
Then in the final five minutes of the third, Marshall outscored NC A&T 12-5, featuring five points from Olson, to take a 48-39 advantage into the fourth.
MU opened the fourth with the first 10 points of the quarter and cruised to outscore the Aggies 19-9 in the quarter to finish off the 62-45 win.
The Herd turned 15 NC A&T turnovers in 23 points while holding the visitors to just five points off 15 turnovers.
