NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (16-9, 8-4 SBC) delivered a memorable win Wednesday night at Chartway Arena, storming back from 17 points down to earn an 81-79 road win over Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia.
Â
"Tough gritty win by these guys," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the comeback win. "Old Dominion came out in the first half, and they took it to us. They were the aggressor, and they set the tone. We looked a little shell-shocked. We came out in the second half and made some plays. We were having trouble guarding them in man, so we went zone. We went small and played Wyatt at the five with four guards, was able to execute, and execute well enough to get a huge road win."
Â
Wyatt Fricks registered a career-high 13 rebounds and pouring in 24 points to lead all scorers while playing 38 minutes for a double-double. Fricks made eight of his 14 shots from the field.
Â
Jalen Speer orchestrated the offense for a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists while never leaving the floor. His deep three-pointer with 3:54 left gave Marshall its first lead of the second half at 79-77, capping the comeback and igniting the visiting bench.
Â
The game's tension only grew in the final minutes. With 1:08 remaining and Marshall clinging to its narrow edge, Landen Joseph raced ahead for a fast-break two to stretch the lead to 81-77. Joseph was also a defensive spark, coming off the bench to tally three steals—pushing his season total to 25—and chipping in nine points on 4-for-7 shooting.
Â
Noah Otshudi continued his consistent run as a starter, adding 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting in his 25th consecutive start.
Â
Marshall's resilience showed in its second-half numbers, shooting 62 percent from the field (16-for-26) and outscoring Old Dominion 47-32 after halftime and trailing 56-39 with 17:23 left in the contest. The Herd dominated the fast-break category 17-10.
