CONWAY, S.C. – Marshall senior guard Jalen Speer netted a career-high 39 points, but the Thundering Herd's late rally fell just short as Coastal Carolina earned a 79-75 win on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 18-11 overall and 10-6 in Sun Belt Conference action.
"We lost a tough game," Marshall head coach Cornelius Jackson said. "Coastal came out and set the tone from the beginning. We looked a little tired. That was our fifth game in 10 days. I'm proud of these guys for keeping fighting."
Marshall trailed by 13 points with 2:17 left in the contest, but Speer scored 13 straight points for the Herd to help the team get back into it.
His layup with 20 seconds left cut the Coastal Carolina lead to 78-75, but the Herd could not get any closer as the Chanticleers closed out the home victory.
Speer finished the game 11 of 23 from the floor and 13 of 15 from the foul line.
Noah Otshudi added 18 points for the Herd, who fell behind by double-digits for the second-straight road contest, only to rally back late.
While hot shooting from the outside got the Herd back into the game on Thursday in the comeback win over App, the team couldn't find its range from deep on Saturday, finishing just 5 of 20 from 3-point range.
