HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (19-11, 11-6 SBC) picked up a key 97-88 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Tuesday night in the Cam Henderson Center. The win moved the Herd into a tie for first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings heading into the final game of the regular season on Friday.
"We found a way to win," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the win. "Obviously, it wasn't because of our defense. They had 52 points in the paint. So obviously you have to play a lot better defensively on Friday night, but again it's that time of year where you have to find a way to win right. You know on the second go around."
MU delivered offensively with a season-high 59.7 percent shooting from the floor with four players scoring at least 18 points.
Wyatt Fricks headlined the victory with 28 points on a blistering 12-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-6 from three, while swatting away three shots on the defensive end. Fricks' night marked his third game in the last five with 20 or more points.
The offensive explosion did not stop there. Landen Joseph continued his late-season surge, posting 18 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Noah Otshudi delivered a well-rounded performance, also scoring 18 points while adding three rebounds, six assists and a team-best two steals. Jalen Speer was flawless inside the arc and finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Marshall's dominance was evident throughout, as the Herd built a 13-point lead late in the first half behind a flurry from Fricks and maintained separation the rest of the way. Even when Old Dominion cut the margin to six early in the second, Marshall responded emphatically with back-to-back buckets from Otshudi and Erich Harding. The Monarchs were held to just 22 percent from beyond the arc and forced into tough possessions by Marshall's relentless ball movement and transition attack. The Herd outscored Old Dominion 14-4 in fast break points and doubled them up in points off turnovers (12-6).
