Turner-Bradshaw leads balanced offense to win over defense to close spring practice

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw caught four passes for 77 yards and Marshall's offense showed strong balance in all facets to earn a 28-20 win over Green in front of a great showing of fans at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Turner-Bradshaw's performance highlighted a day in which head coach Tony Gibson saw many good things as the Thundering Herd closed out spring practice.

"I thought some guys really stood out," Gibson said. "I thought Zay Bradshaw had a really nice game and Carlos (Del Rio-Wilson) was smooth – the first two drives, went and scored and then we got him out."

Del Rio-Wilson took part in two offensive drives in the contest – both of which led to touchdowns. He finished the game 4-of-5 through the air for 68 yards and rushed three times for 13 yards.

Two of those early passing completions went to Turner-Bradshaw for 37 and 8 yards respectively to set up a 24-yard touchdown run by Christian Hamilton after Del Rio-Wilson rushed downfield a couple yards and threw laterally to his receiver on the sideline once the defense converged.

Turner-Bradshaw, the son of Marshall running back great Ahmad Bradshaw, said the game was a positive end to an exciting spring for the Herd offense and it's special for him to suit up for the Herd and help get Marshall Football rolling once again.

"Not only for me, not only for the fans, but for the '75' and what they restarted and built back up," Turner-Bradshaw said.

The second was a 3-yard plunge by newcomer T.J. Lester who led all rushers with 45 yards on only six carries.

"It was pretty fun today," Lester said. "We worked out all winter long, so it was good to go out there and see it all pay off."

Zion Turner also led a touchdown drive in the second half that ended with Tracy Stephens' 10-yard touchdown catch.

For the second-straight Spring Game, Sherone White also found the end zone, scoring on a 17-yard pass from Koi Fagan on a third-and-14 play late in the contest to set the final score and keep the defense from a comeback win.

The defense was led by Terrente Hinton, who had four tackles and a pass breakup, as well as Chason Clark, who had four tackles and a sack. Charles McCartherens also had four tackles on the afternoon while EahJay McAdams also had three tackles, a tackle for loss and the game's only turnover – an interception.

The game featured a modified scoring system in which offensive scoring was normal while the defense earned three points for a stop, five points for a turnover and 11 points for a turnover with a score.

The first half consisted of two 15-minute quarters – the first in a traditional time clock model and the second quarter with a modified running clock.

Between the first and second quarter, Marshall honored its WNIT Championship Women's Basketball team.

At "halftime" of the game, more than 120 Marshall Football alumni took the field to be recognized, followed by a "second half" that allowed fans to come down to the field for autographs and photos with players.

"First off, I'd like to thank the fans – great turnout and great support from our alumni. We had an event last night and there were over 120 former players here. That's what it's all about. The Spring Game is getting fans back involved and giving them a taste of football again. Being able to honor our women's basketball team for their championship last week was a great touch. It was a great day."

The day got started with the Spring Fountain Ceremony, which the entire team attended. Former Young Thundering Herd quarterback David Walsh served as the keynote speaker for that ceremony.
