Marshall Tennis Earns 5-2 Victory Over Dayton

Mokrynska, Gumeniuk lead Herd to outdoor win on Sunday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Tennis earned a 5-2 win over Dayton on a warm Sunday afternoon at Brian David Fox Tennis Center in Huntington.
Alina Mokrynska and Polina Gumeniuk each earned a pair of wins for the Herd on Sunday to lead the victory over the Flyers.
"Those two did a great job playing their doubles and then coming out and playing in singles and getting off to really good starts," Marshall tennis coach John Mercer said. "They are showing that they are playing at a really high level and that's great to see as we get closer to the conference tournament."
With the win, Marshall moves to 11-10 on the year.
Mokrynska and Gumeniuk got the day started on a good note, taking their opening match over Dayton's tandem of Natalie Osiecki and Montserrat Sierra by a 6-2 score. The team did not lose a single point in their first three games of the set.
The doubles point became the Herd's when Thalia Smith, who also had two wins on the day, joined with Nour El Ouazzani to get a 6-3 win over Dayton's Christian Chin and Haley Klein.
That momentum bled into the singles matches where Smith got a 6-0, 6-1 win over Dayton's Mallory Hitchcock to give the Herd the lead again after a Herd retirement at No. 3 singles had knotted the match.
Soon after, the match was clinched as Mokrynska got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chin on Court No. 2 and Gumeniuk got a 6-0, 6-2 win over Osiecki on the adjacent No. 1 Court to earn a win for the Herd.
Paula Berzina got the Herd's last win of the day with a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win over Dayton's Haley Klein to end the day.
Marshall returns to action at 1 p.m. on Friday for a match against Miami (Ohio). That match is tentatively scheduled for the Brian David Fox Tennis Center, weather permitting.
