Polina Gumeniuk Named SBC Freshman of the Year

NEW ORLEANS – Marshall Tennis freshman Polina Gumeniuk was named the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, as announced by the league office. Gumeniuk was also named Second-Team All-SBC in singles.
 
Johanna Strom earned an All-SBC First-Team Singles honor, the fourth First-Team Singles recognition of her career. Strom also earned a Second-Team Doubles nod with partner Alina Mokrynska.
 
Gumeniuk joined the Herd in the spring and posted a 14-5 record in singles, between number one and two positions, with a 10-9 doubles record. Across the Ukrainian's singles contests, she captured 11 wins in straight sets and a perfect 3-0 at the SBC Tournament and was leading ODU's Victoria Matasova in the championship match when it went unfinished.
 
Strom closed out her senior season with a 17-10 singles record. The native of Stockholm, Sweden, reached the ITA Atlantic Regional Quarterfinals in singles and earned an invitation to the ITA Sectionals in the fall. 11 of Strom's wins came in straight sets.
 
Alina Mokrynska and Strom were dominant as a doubles pairing sporting an 11-4 record, including 9-3 during the spring at the number one position. The duo went a perfect 3-0 at the SBC Tournament.
