Herd Falls to Coastal Carolina in SBC Quarterfinals

LAFAYETTE, La. — Marshall dropped its Sun Belt Conference Quarterfinal matchup to Coastal Carolina by a 6-0 scoreline. The Herd is now 37-17.
The Herd found itself unable to manufacture runs for the second-consecutive contest. MU had scored at least a run in each of its first 52 games in 2026.
A two-run blast for Coastal gave the Chanticleers a two-run lead just two batters into the game. Starter Jules King would strike out six and successfully navigate out of a bases loaded jam in the 3rd. A grand slam for CCU in the 5th would unfortunately be an insurmountable blow.
Senior Paige Maynard pitched 2.2 shutout innings in relief.
The season remains in limbo for the Herd through Sunday. The Herd entered Friday with a RPI ranking 27, typically a favorable spot for at-large positions. The Herd currently has 26 Top-100 wins, including four Top-50 victories.
"The Sun Belt is one of the top conferences," Coach Zerkle said, "It shows no matter what team we're facing all season long, it is so competitive and I think that gives us a real shot to compete against the best of the best. We started out in February competing against the best of the best, I think we have it in us to do it again. The Sun Belt is competitive and it has prepared us for the Regional Tournament if we are given the opportunity."
