HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The following is a statement from Marshall University President Brad D. Smith on the release of Marshall's new white paper titled, "From The Mountains, Not The Sidelines: The Future of College Athletics and Why This Moment Matters to Marshall University, Appalachia, and America:
Intercollegiate athletics is changing quickly, and the decisions being made now will shape opportunities for student-athletes, universities and communities for the foreseeable future.
At Marshall University, athletics has always meant more than just competition. It's part of who we are, how we serve and how our story reaches the world.
Today, Marshall released a new white paper, "From the Mountains, Not the Sidelines: The Future of College Athletics and Why This Moment Matters to Marshall University, Appalachia, and America."
The paper examines the changing landscape of college athletics and why schools like Marshall must be part of the national conversation about its future. It also calls for a national solution, with the help of Congress, focused on fairness, transparency, sustainability, student-athlete opportunity, and the preservation of broad-based athletics — especially for institutions competing outside the wealthiest conferences.
