Cornell Brown
In 2020, Brown will begin his fourth season as Marshall’s defensive ends coach.

In 2019, Brown mentored Darius Hodge, who led the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks. Against Old Dominion, Hodge put together one of the greatest individual performances in program history when he tied a single-game Marshall record with 4.5 sacks against the Monarchs.

Brown has mentored defensive end Ty Tyler during his first two seasons, a player who has emerged as one of Conference USA’s top pass rushers. A second-team all-league selection in 2018 and a member of the conference’s all-freshman team in 2016, Tyler finished 2018 with 9.0 sacks, one shy of becoming the first player since Vinny Curry (2011) with double-digit sack totals. He ranked No. 24 nationally in sacks last season.

Brown was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Norfolk State in 2016, but college football fans may remember him as one of the greatest defensive players in Virginia Tech history. Brown starred along the defensive line for the Hokies from 1993-96, becoming the program's first junior to receive consensus All-American recognition.

He had his jersey retired in 2002, joined the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. A sixth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens, Brown played seven years in the National Football League, logging 108 games (25 starts) and winning a Super Bowl ring.

Brown returned to Virginia Tech, first as a graduate assistant and later as an outside linebackers and assistant defensive line coach for defensive coordinator Bud Foster. Brown coached five seasons under legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer (2011-2015).
