Derek Shay is in his first year as the tight ends coach at Marshall following his hiring in March 2023.
Shay comes to Marshall after spending the 2022 season working with Missouri’s offense as a Senior Offensive Analyst. In that role, Shay specialized in run game and pass protection analysis, breaking down tendencies and leading the Tigers to success that saw them play in the Gasparilla Bowl.
In addition to his duties with analysis, Shay directly oversaw Missouri’s youth camps in the summer. He was recognized by On3.com as one of “65 Rising Star Support Staff Coaches” prior to his hire by Marshall head coach Charles Huff.
Prior to his time at Missouri, Shay was at another SEC stop, serving as a graduate assistant tight ends coach at LSU from March 2020 to March 2022.
LSU’s tight end room saw a wealth of success under Shay’s guidance in recruiting and development as he coached three players who went on to be Freshman All-SEC performers: Arik Gilbert (2020), Jack Bech (2021) and Mason Taylor (2022). Bech went on to be a Freshman All-American.
Along with the development of the tight ends for LSU, Shay helped contribute to one of the Top-20 passing offenses in 2020 by working with the offensive line through Visio Run Drawings, which assisted with development of the offensive tackles.
During his time in Baton Rouge, Shay was recognized by On3.com as one of “50 Rising Coaches You Need to Know.”
Shay made the jump to the SEC after seeing success in coaching the tackles and tight ends at FCS member McNeese State in the 2019 season. McNeese State averaged 382 yards per game of total offense – nearly 100 yards more than their 2018 numbers – and the program extended its FCS record of consecutive winning seasons to 15.
Before his time at McNeese State, Shay served on the staff of one of the nation’s top prep powerhouses – IMG Academy in Florida. Shay served as Co-Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach for IMG, which achieved a Top-5 national ranking for two straight years.
In all, Shay coached six All-American Offensive Linemen at IMG and 10 linemen who went on to sign Division I scholarships. Shay also assisted with NFL Combine Training and NFL Pathway Program training.
Shay’s coaching career started in Dec. 2011 when he signed on to be a student assistant for Eastern Illinois – a position he held until he because a tight ends graduate assistant at Bowling Green State University in Jan. 2014.
At Bowling Green, Shay assisted in leading the team to a MAC East Championship and also a win in the Camellia Bowl. Following that stop, Shay moved on to Warren Central High School in Indianapolis in March 2015.
Shay played collegiately for one season at Western Illinois University before transferring to Eastern Illinois to finish his degree and get his coaching career started.
