Schaefer was an All-American swimmer at Ohio State (1961-63) in the backstroke, won the 100 and 200 yard backstroke National Championship in 1962, was a member of the 1959 U.S. team at the Pan Am Games and a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic Swim Team … Chose Marshall because “…of the tight knight community.
