Tim Whitesel joined the staff for Marshall Women's Basketball in July 2024 as Assistant Coach and Director of Quantitative Analytics.

Prior to joining the Herd staff, Whitesel spent eight years at Transylvania University in the same capacity, leading the Pioneers to unprecedented success, which included a 91-2 record over the final three seasons in Lexington, KY. That record included a 33-0 record in the 2022-23 season when Transy won the first national championship in school history and a 31-1 mark in the 2023-24 season that advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four. While at Transy, Tim and head coach Juli Fulks also coauthored and published “The More Rules and Strategies of Basketball Change, the More Winning Characteristics Remain the Same: An Analysis of NCAA Women’s Competition” in The International Journal of Sports Science.

Prior to joining the TU staff in 2014, Whitesel served as an Associate Head Coach and Assistant Coach for the women's basketball program at Lewis & Clark College with coach Fulks for 10 years. While at Lewis & Clark, Tim helped the Pioneers win the Northwest Conference twice and participate in the NCAA tournament three times. During that time, Tim also helped facilitate the development of coach Fulks’ Metazone defense that was instrumental in Transy winning the national championship as well as the 2025-26 Herd winning the WNIT championship and holding two different teams scoreless for an entire quarter during their path to that championship.

Previous to Lewis & Clark, Tim spent three seasons as the Head Girl’s Coach at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon, and spent nine seasons coaching collegiate men's basketball at Concordia University (Oregon) and Eastern Oregon University.

A native of Fredonia, New York, Tim earned his B.S. in Biology and B.A. in Philosophy from State University of New York, College at Fredonia. Tim continued his education at the University of Rhode Island where he graduated with his M.S. in Zoology and later his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences.

Tim also works as a conservation scientist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and serves as an Adjunct Professor for Portland State University’s Department of Biology. Tim’s daughter, Natalie, is part of the winningest women’s basketball class at Whitman College and now lives in Washington DC. Tim currently resides in Brush Prairie, Washington, with his wife Dr. MaryLouise Keefe.
