George “Albie” Maier played football as a freshman at Marshall for Cam Henderson, then a season for Pete Pederson, and after serving in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, completed his career as a captain for Herb Royer. Recruited to Marshall out of Lakewood High School in New Jersey, where he was an all-state selection, Maier lined up as a freshman guard for Henderson’s final year as the Thundering Herd football coach in 1949, then starred in Pederson’s rookie season as coach. He was named first team All-Ohio Valley Conference in 1950. Maier was then called to service in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, where he received four battle stars, a Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation. After being released from military duties he returned to finish his playing career under Royer, winning first team All-Mid-American Conference recognition as a senior.

After graduation, Maier was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 18th round of the 1955 NFL Draft, then returned to his native New Jersey to coach football at Lakewood High School before becoming the head coach at Toms River and Northern Burlington high schools. He then became the athletic director, football coach and physical education department chair at Haddon Township High School, where he remained for 25 years until retiring. He was inducted into the Haddon Township High School Hall of Fame in 2003, the Lakewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006 and the New Jersey Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in 2010. Maier was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
