A football and basketball standout for Coach Cam Henderson, as a freshman Bob Wright helped Marshall win the 1947 NAIB National Tournament. Wright played in all five tournament games – over a six-day span – to win the national title. The following season Wright helped Marshall win the Helms Foundation Los Angeles Invitational with a victory over Syracuse, and return to the NAIB Tournament, where Marshall advanced again to the quarterfinals. Wright gave up football to concentrate on basketball after his sophomore year, eventually becoming a team captain and scoring 1,019 points before his career came to a close. As a senior, he led Marshall by scoring 19.5 points per game and was named the school’s most outstanding athlete of 1949-50. Wright went on to become a highly successful coach at Ashland (Ky.) Paul Blazer High School, where he won the 1961 Kentucky State Tournament championship, and then at Morehead State University, where his 1968-69 Eagles averaged more than 90 points per game on the way to an Ohio Valley Conference co-championship. Wright was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
