  • Induction:

  • Class:
    1979
When Carlos “Bunny” Gibson stepped up to the free throw line, there was a greater chance of the ball going through the hoop than with any other player in Marshall history. In fact, as a junior in the 1977-78 season, he broke the standing NCAA record by making 94.4% (84-of-89) of his attempts. For his career, the Morganfield, Ky., native is also the Marshall all-time best, having made 89.6% (207-of-231). Gibson’s shooting touch was not only evident at the stripe – he scored 1,273 points, mostly on long-range jump shots in the era before the 3-point shot was in effect. On Jan. 30, 1977, Gibson set the Thundering Herd’s single-game scoring record as he poured in 50 points against Tennessee-Chattanooga, and his 22 field goals that night remain the most in school history. Those in attendance at that game estimate that close to 20 of those field goals came from what would have been 3-point distance and that he would have scored close to 70 points had that rule been in effect. Gibson was named first team All-Southern Conference as a junior as he averaged 20.4 points per game and second team all-league as a senior when he led the Herd again, averaging 16.4 points per game. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
