In the early 1950s, Marshall basketball Coach Cam Henderson’s Thundering Herd featured one of the top scoring teams in college basketball, and one of those who packed the scoring punch was David Robinson. The 6-foot-1 forward from Wheeling, W.Va., blossomed as a sophomore in the 1952-53 season, helping Marshall to a 20-4 record and the No. 3 scoring attack in the nation (89.6 points per game). In his junior season, Marshall entered the Mid-American Conference and Robinson averaged 17 points per game, second only on the squad to All-American Walt Walowac. As a senior on Cam Henderson’s final team, Robinson started every game for the third consecutive season and led Marshall and the MAC in free throw shooting on a team that finished 18-4 and in second place in its new conference. When his basketball career came to a close, Robinson then played for the Thundering Herd baseball team in 1955. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
