HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (14-9, 7-5 SBC) fell in four sets (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23) during its final contest of the weekend to the Georgia Southern Eagles on Friday.

"It was a disappointing day," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Obviously it took us too long to get into the gameplan and flow of things."

Maddie Smith led the way with 21 kills to go with 16 digs as Emma Barnett had a team-high 20 digs with 10 kills with the pair recording double-doubles for the second straight contest.

Kahea Carvalho had 25 assists with Isabelle Nieves adding 22.

The first set was close as the two sides were tied eight times with just one lead change. That lone change came with the Eagles grabbing the lead on a MU error to make it 6-5. The set was tied late at 22-22, but Georgia Southern captured the final three points to win the frame 25-22. The Eagles capitalized on the Herd's mistake as home team made eight attacking and five service errors in the set.

After Georgia Southern took the second set wire-to-wire, 25-15, Marshall trailed 2-0 heading into the third. That's when MU stepped up. The Herd took the lead from the opening point on a Marae Reilly kill and led the entire set. The set was tied just twice and the last at 6-6 as Marshall held Georgia Southern at bay for the 25-22 win and forcing a fourth set. MU hit .271 in the frame with 17 kills on 48 attacks and only four errors.

The fourth was a see-saw battle. The two sides were tied eight times like the first, trading points and rallies to see the set tied 23-23 after a GS attacking error. However, the Eagles used a kill and a block assist to seal the set, 25-23, and the match.
