From the time he stepped onto the Fairfield Stadium turf as a freshman in 1988, Dewey Klein left an indelible mark in the Marshall record books. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native led the Marshall football team in scoring as a freshman, setting school records by successfully converting 19 field goals and also with 98 points, at the time the most by a Thundering Herd kicker. Klein went on to lead the team in scoring all four years of his career, and finished his career as the school’s career scoring leader with 330 points.
Klein’s average of 6.6 points per game is ninth all-time at Marshall. His best individual season came as a senior, with 106 points. His 61 successful point-after attempts as a senior on Marshall's national runner-up squad was a school record that stood for 12 seasons. Klein also holds Marshall's career field goals made mark still after 25 years, making 54 total (of 77 attempted). He was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 1988, winning the scoring title that season, and was second-team all-conference in 1988 and 1990. He captured first-team honors in 1989 and 1991. Klein was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
