  • Induction:
    1990
The pioneer of the women’s sports program at Marshall University, Dr. Dorothy “Dot” Hicks led the school’s female student-athletes from a time of intramural activities into an era of organized intercollegiate competition and eventually to become fully integrated into the overall athletic department. After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Peabody College in her hometown of Nashville, Tenn., and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee, Hicks became a professor in the Marshall Health, Physical Recreation and Education Department for 30 years and went to work providing avenues for the school’s female students to participate in intercollegiate competition. She served as the Director of Athletics for women’s sports and the liaison to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), while at various times coaching the volleyball, badminton, tennis and golf teams. In 1974, Hicks awarded Marshall’s first athletic scholarships in women’s sports to golfer Nancy Bunton and baskeball player Kathy Haas.
