Marshall University Athletics
Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame

Ed Starling
- Induction:
- 1992
When a Marshall University student-athlete is honored as the school’s male athlete of the year, he receives an award named for Ed Starling. A native of Williamson, W.Va., Starling had been a star athlete himself, as he helped West Virginia State University to a pair of championships at the black college national tournaments in 1947 and 1948. After graduating in 1951, Starling returned to his hometown and served as a coach at Liberty and Williamson high schools, then joined Marshall as an assistant for head basketball Coach Stewart Way for the 1969-70 season and, a year later, moved into the position of assistant athletic director. Starling remained an assistant or associate athletic director at Marshall until he retired in 1987, serving as an interim athletic director on three occasions, including the most difficult time in school history, when then-Athletic Director Charlie Kautz was among those killed in the 1970 plane crash. Starling was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
