We’ll never know just how many points George Stone would have scored at Marshall University if the 3-point line had been on the floor during his career, but all who watched him play agree that a large percentage of his shots would have been from beyond the arc. As it was, the 6-foot-7, Covington, Ky., native still scored 1,723 points in his three seasons with the Thundering Herd varsity. Stone was a first team All-Mid-American Conference selection in 1967 and won second team all-league honors in 1968. As a junior, Stone – who led Marshall in scoring all three years of his career – averaged 24.4 points per game as the MAC’s leading scorer for the second straight year, and carried the Thundering Herd to the NIT final four by scoring 46 points in a quarterfinal win over Nebraska at Madison Square Garden. Stone’s shooting touch also showed up at the free throw line, where he made 82.7 percent of his career attempts.
Stone was then chosen in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1968 NBA Draft and in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Stars in that year’s ABA Draft. Stone chose to sign with the Stars and averaged 13.6 points per game over four seasons in the ABA. That included a league championship for the Stars, who had moved to Utah, in 1971. Stone’s career 3-point percentage placed him in the top 10 in ABA history. Stone was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
