The Vinson High School product played golf for his hometown college and led Marshall to the Mid-American Conference team championship in 1966 as he won the league’s individual title. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in 1968 and was runner-up to the legendary Bill Campbell in the 1975 West Virginia Amateur Championship. In 1973, Feaganes became Marshall’s head coach, a title he held for the next 40 years, and also coached the women’s team from 2002-04 when that program was resurrected. In his time as Marshall’s head coach he tutored four All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans, three conference individual champions and led the 1976 team to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Tournament. Feaganes also served for several years as an associate athletic director at Marshall and also as executive director of the Big Green Scholarship Foundation. He served as president of the Golf Coaches Association of America, head coach of Team USA in a series of matches against Japan and Tournament Director for the Palmer Cup (USA vs. Europe), and still found time to serve for 30 years as a high school football and basketball official. The annual Marshall Invitational golf tournament was named in his honor in 2013. Feaganes was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 1999. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
