If a Marshall team was playing in early 1930s, Raymond “Ramey” Hunter was probably right in the middle of the action. An all-state football end at Huntington High School, Hunter chose to play for his hometown college – and play he did. As a freshman in the 1929-30 school year, Hunter lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. In his four years at Marshall, Hunter earned a total of 14 varsity letters and became a team captain in all four sports. He was a three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection in football, then as a senior was the No. 2 scorer and an All-Buckeye Athletic Conference basketball player. On the baseball field, Hunter – a second baseman – helped the squad win WVIAC titles in 1929, 1930 and 1931, then to an 8-6 record in its first year in the Buckeye Conference as a senior. The 1929 baseball team went 14-1, losing the season opener to Morris Harvey College and then winning 14 in a row, including a pair of wins over West Virginia University and a double-header sweep of Notre Dame. Hunter was selected to play in the 1932 North-South All-Star football game in Baltimore, Md., and won MVP honors when he blocked a punt and also recovered it for a touchdown to give the South a 7-6 win. Hunter then played pro football for the NFL’s Portsmouth Spartans (today’s Detroit Lions) before owning and operating a hardware business in Montana. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
