Recruited to Marshall as a running back from Buffalo, N.Y., Sean Doctor was moved to tight end during spring practice in 1987, a switch that paid huge dividends for Coach George Chaump’s Thundering Herd. The next fall Marshall advanced all the way to the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship Game against Northeast Louisiana in Pocatello, Idaho, and Doctor’s 97 receptions, 1,372 yards and 9 touchdowns were a big part of the Herd’s success. Doctor won first team All-America accolades that season, a feat he replicated the next year when he followed with another 51 catches and 728 yards as a senior in 1988, helping Marshall win its first Southern Conference football championship. Also named first team All-Southern Conference in each of those seasons, Doctor was taken in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and played professionally in the Arena League and the World League of American Football. Doctor was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
