One of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the nation as a senior in Lyndhurst, N.J., Ted Shoebridge chose Marshall from a list of some 100 schools that actively recruited him. The star signal caller led the 1968 Marshall freshman team to a perfect 5-0 season, then settled in as the Herd’s varsity quarterback as a sophomore. In November 1969, Shoebridge not only led Coach Rick Tolley’s team to its first victory in three years, but Marshall broke its 27-game winless skid by beating Bowling Green, Kent State and East Carolina in successive weeks. That season, Shoebridge rewrote the school’s passing records as he threw for 1,620 yards and 13 touchdowns – the touchdown passes gave him Marshall’s career TD pass record in just the one season. He also obliterated the school’s single-game passing mark when he threw for 320 yards against Ohio University. A standout baseball catcher as well, Shoebridge played for Coach Jack Cook’s team in the spring of 1970 before returning to the football field again the following fall. Shoebridge passed for another 1,000 yards in his junior season, then was among the 75 killed when the team plane returning from a game at East Carolina crashed upon approach at the Huntington Tri-State Airport. Shoebridge was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
