Women's Soccer Upsets 1st Place Buffalo

10/12/2001

The Marshall University women?s soccer team defeated the University at Buffalo 1-0 on Friday night at Sam Hood Field. The Bulls, first place in the Mid-American Conference, were out shot by the Herd 35-7.

?We created more goal scoring opportunities tonight than any other match this season,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?The players believed in each other and that?s what I?m most proud of.?

Both teams had several good scoring opportunities, but regulation play ended in a 0-0 deadlock. Marshall (6-5-1,3-3-1)dominated the match in almost every statstical category, but could not capitalize. The Bulls (7-6-0, 6-3-0) appeared to score a goal in the last minute of regulation, but were called for an offsides violation.

Marshall?s Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) scored the game-winning goal 10 minutes into overtime play. Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, MN) fed a nice ball into the box off a corner kick and Jessica Mays (Franklin, OH) promptly relayed it to Gupton for the score.

?We played our best game of the year,? junior midfielder Lindsey Jayjack said. ?Everyone did their part and we dominated one of the best teams in the MAC tonight.?

Marshall jumps right back in to MAC play on Sunday against Miami University. That match will be played at 2:30 p.m. at Sam Hood Field.
