Women's Soccer Defeats Bowling Green 3-1

Huntington, WVa.-Marshall University women?s soccer team defeated Bowling Green State University 3-1 on Friday night. The Thundering Herd controlled the ball most of the match outshooting the Falcons 19-3. Marshall moves its record to 7-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory, while Bowling Green drops to 7-6-2 and 2-5-1 in the MAC. The victory comes at a crucial time for the Herd as they try to move into the top of the conference and gain elgibility for post season play.

?I?m very proud of our team,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?Our three goals and the two that were called back showed that we were committed to going forward and making the most of our opportunities. Our depth was key for us tonight. Now we look ahead to Toledo.?

Marshall took the early lead on a goal from Michelle Losekamp (Arlington, TX). Erin Steinke (Cincinnati, OH) and Jessica Mays (Franklin, OH) made a nice run and passed to Losekamp who rifled a left-footed shot past the Falcon?s goalkeeper.

?We know we really need to win right now and we all came together as a team tonight and got it done,? Losekamp said.

The next score did not come until the 52nd minute of the match when Kelly Kennedy (Ft. Wright, KY) launched a shot from 35 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. Bowling Green?s Kristy Coppes, the MAC?s leading goal scorer, answered in the 74th minute with a goal that squeaked past Marshall?s keeper.

Mays put the game away for the Herd in the 84th minute when she knocked the ball in the goal to put Marshall ahead 3-1.

?We?ve been battling for a long time and now it feels like its finally all coming together at crunch time,? Mays said.

The Herd continue their homestand on Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field. They will face the University of Toledo at 1:00 p.m.
