The Marshall University women?s soccer team (9-6-1, 6-4-1 MAC) won its third straight contest Friday afternoon against Western Michigan (8-8, 6-5 MAC) 2-0 in an important MAC contest.

"I am really proud of our team," head coach Teresa Patterson said. "We reacted well to the adverse weather conditions. We are playing really well right now and look to keep the streak going."

Marshall was outshot by the Broncos 7-6, but the Herd took advantage of their chances. Marshall took an early 1-0 lead in the second minute on their first shot of the game, which was taken by Sarah Gupton (Richmond, Ind.). Gupton?s goal found the left post in the cold rain and win to give the Herd a lead they would not relinquish. The goal was assisted by Lauren Scott (Hillard, Ohio) and Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, Minn.). The Herd scored again in the 79th minute, when McMahon scored on a cross eight yards out from Jessica Mays (Franklin, Ohio). Marshall goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods played an outstanding game, notching five saves to move Marshall?s MAC-leading goals against average down to a paltry .75 goals per game.

The win assures Marshall of a spot in the upcoming MAC Tournament. However, their opponent and the site of their first round game is still to be determined.

The Herd end conference play with a game against Northern Illinois in Dekalb, Ill. The game kicks off Sunday at noon.
