Marshall University senior linebacker Max Yates was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his performance over the weekend in the Herd?s 37-15 victory over Northern Illinois.
Yates, a senior from Newport News, Va., led Marshall with 10 solo tackles and six assists in the game against the Huskies. In addition, he also had four tackles for losses of 26 yards, including a pair of sacks.
Yates spearheaded a defensive effort that included two defensive touchdowns for the Herd.
For the season Yates leads Marshall with 42.5 total tackles including 33 solo stops. He has also recorded five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
Yates joins teammates Trod Buggs, Byron Leftwich and Roberto Terrell as players who have been honored by the MAC as players of the week so far this season.
The Herd returns to action this weekend at Buffalo. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised in the Huntington area by WCHP-30 in Portsmouth.
