Louisville Prep Star Signs With Men's Basketball
11/21/2001
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Basketball Coach Greg White announced today that Louisville prep star LaVar Carter has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Thundering Herd.
?LaVar is a big, strong post player who is physically ready to compete in the Mid-American Conference right away,? White said. ?LaVar has all the tools. He will be a ?Player of the the Year? candidate in Kentucky this season.?
Carter, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound center, averaged 10 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game for head coach Bryce Hibbard last season at Louisville?s Male High School.
?LaVar is going to be the next great Kentucky player to go to Marshall,? Hibbard said. ?We are familiar with J.R. VanHoose and Ronny Dawn and we feel that LaVar will fit right in and have a great career.?
Carter chose Marshall over Arkansas, Wright State, Butler, and Western Kentucky.
?I felt very comfortable with all the players and really liked how the coaches got along with everybody,? Carter said. ?The atmosphere in Huntington is very similar to Louisville. Huntington felt like home to me and I feel like I have a great opportunity in the classroom and on the basketball court at Marshall.?
The addition of Carter, brings the total number of Marshall?s signees to four. Carter joins West Virginia native Mark Patton and Hargrave Military Academy?s Robert Strickland and Renardo Dixon.
?LaVar is only 17 years old, but his body type is comparable to Charles Oakley of the NBA,? White said. ?He is a great kid from a great family and he will do a great job here at Marshall.?
