HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University?s J.R. VanHoose scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Thundering Herd to a 93-63 win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello Wednesday.
VanHoose, a 6-10 senior center from Paintsville, Ky., dominated the low post, hitting 8 of 13 shots from the floor and pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds in only 30 minutes of action. The senior All-America candidate also added two blocks and two assists.
In addition to VanHoose, Marshall got tremendous efforts from seniors Tamar Slay and Latece Williams. Slay, a 6-9 guard from Beckley, W.Va., scored a game-high 24 points, while Williams, a 6-8 forward from Rome, Ga., scored a career-high 21 points to go with his eight rebounds.
The Thundering Herd?s Ronny Dawn, a freshman guard from Ft. Thomas, Ky., also reached double-figures with 12 points.
UAM (0-6) was led by Jun McClain?s 16 points and Benas Matkevicius? 13 points. Dennis Harris pulled-down a team-high seven rebounds for the Division II Boll Weevils who will play at West Virginia University Saturday.
Marshall led by as many as 20 points in the first half, before a late Boll Weevil run cut the lead to 14 at the break (46-32). In the second half, Marshall continued to take advantage of turnovers to push the lead to as much as 37 points. The Herd forced 23 UAM turnovers and outrebounded the Boll Weevils 42-32.
The Herd shot an impressive 56.9% from the field, connecting on 37 of 65 shots. In comparison UAM shot 36.9% from the field on 24 of 65 shooting.
Marshall (2-3) will return to action next Monday. The Thundering Herd will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to take on Winthrop University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
