Men's Basketball Travels to Winthrop
12/1/2001
Marshall University's men's basketball team will look to improve to 3-3 on the season when it travels to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop University Monday.
Marshall has won two straight games after starting the season off with a pair of losses at the NABC Classic in Lexington, Ky., and a loss to Troy State on November 23rd in Huntington.
The Herd is being paced by senior All-America candidate Tamar Slay. The 6-9 guard from Beckley, W.Va., is pouring in 22.8 points per game.
Winthrop (2-4) is coming off a disappointing 58-55 loss at Hartford. The Eagles have gone to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments and return four starters from last year's 18-13 Big South Championship team. Winthrop is coached by former Marshall University assistant Gregg Marshall.
The two teams met for the first time in Huntington last season, with the Thundering Herd emerging with a 73-50 win. In that game Marshall's J.R. VanHoose netted 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The Eagles were paced by Marshall transfer, and then Winthrop junior guard, Derrick Knox's 18 points.
Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Winthrop Colisieum. The game will be carried live by the Thundering Herd Television Network (WSAZ-TV locally/ESPN-Plus).
