Women's Soccer Falls to 25th Ranked Kentucky 2-1

Lexington, KY-Marshall University women?s soccer team lost a tight match to The University of Kentucky 2-1 on Friday night. The match was hard fought with Marshall (0-1) losing two starters to injury in the first half. The University of Kentucky (1-0) held the 25th position in the preseason national rankings.
?I am really proud of the team. They showed heart for 90 minutes. Depth was the key for us as we lost two starters in the first half. Kentucky is a very talented and experienced team. We?ll take what we learned back to the training field as we prepare for Xavier and Cincinnati,? said Marshall Head Coach Teresa Patterson.
Junior forward Kelly Posey (Manassas, VA) scored the lone goal for Marshall off a header in the 7th minute of the game. Amanda McMahon (Stillwater, MN) and Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) were credited with assists on the goal. Marshall held the lead for most of the game until Kentucky?s Suzie Ledzianowski scored from 30 yards out in the 70th minute. The game winner came in the 79th minute when Kentucky?s Kathy Fulk scored during a scramble in front of the net.
The two teams played evenly with Marshall recording 9 shots and Kentucky 11 shots. Freshman Ashleigh Woods got the start in goal and recorded 2 saves. Depth was also key for Marshall as 17 players saw action in the game.
?We played very well. We were able to score first and that gave us a lot of confidence. If we play this good against the Mid-American Conference teams we should do very well this season,? said team captain Erin Steinke.
Marshall women?s soccer opens the home portion of its schedule Sunday against IUPUI on the campus of Marshall University. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m. and it will be meet the team day at Sam Hood Field. Players and coaches will meet and greet the fans following the game. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Marshall students get in free with student ID. A Go Herd Card can be purchased for $40 for an adult pass and $25 for a youth pass.
