Leftwich Leads Herd Past Falcons

9/29/2001

Herd QB Byron Leftwich

Byron Leftwich threw four touchdown passes, including a 10-yarder to Josh Davis with 2:48 left to lift Marshall past Bowling Green 37-31 Saturday night.

Marshall (2-1, 1-0 Mid-American) overcame an 11-point deficit early in the third quarter to spoil a stellar night for the Falcons' Andy Sahm and Robert Redd.

Sahm threw three TD passes and Redd had a school-record 215 yards receiving for Bowling Green (3-1, 1-1), which lost for the first time under new coach Urban Meyer.

Leftwich hit Davis with a bullet pass across the middle to cap a 10-play, 66-yard drive.

Leftwich completed 21 of 35 passes for 327 yards. Two of his TDs were to sophomore Darius Watts, who had eight catches for 198 yards.

Leftwich has 10 TD passes and just one interception this season.

After Marshall went ahead, Bowling Green got the ball at its 12 and drove to the Marshall 40, but Sahm was intercepted by Yancey Satterwhite at the Herd 3 in the finals seconds.

Sahm's third TD pass _ a 3-yarder to Kurt Gerling _ put Bowling Green ahead 31-20 early in the third quarter, but the Falcons were shut down on their next four possessions.

Marshall's Curtis Head kicked a 41-yard field goal and Leftwich hit Franklin Wallace with a 12-yard scoring pass to cut the deficit to 31-29 midway through the quarter.

Watts later dropped a 20-yard pass in the end zone late and Leftwich was sacked on the next play, pushing Marshall out of field goal range.

Davis, a redshirt freshman, caught nine passes for 92 yards.

Sahm was 16-of-30 for 264 yards. Joe Alls rushed for 107 yards.
