HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University women?s soccer team defeated Kent State University, 2-1 on a soggy Sam Hood Field on Friday evening. The Mid-American Conference victory will push Marshall up in the standings as they improve their record to 2-3-1 in the MAC and 5-5-1 overall.
?This was definitely a step toward reaching our full potential,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?We responded well after we found ourselves down a goal. We did a good job of spreading them out and isolating their defenders and now we have to take that momentum into Buffalo on Sunday.?
Kent State (4-7-1/2-5-1) jumped out to the early lead as Amanda Messer slipped the ball past Marshall?s goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, NY) who came charging out to cut off the cross.
The score went unanswered until Marshall?s senior forward Kelly Posey (Manassas, VA) came through on a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
Nearly 15 minutes later a pair of freshmen combined to put the Herd ahead. Ashley Schillig (New Albany, OH) fired a monstrous shot which bounced off Kent goalkeeper Lindsey Mitchell and MU?s Jaime Gruber (Hudson, OH) was there to knock the ball in the net and put the Herd up 2-1. That score would stand as Marshall would come from behind to secure the MAC victory.
?My teammates were really supportive,? Posey said. ?It was a physical battle, but we stuck with it and pulled it out all the way through to the end.?
Marshall out shot Kent 16-13, but the Flashes held the advantage in corner kicks 4-0. The two teams combined for 34 fouls in the hard fought contest. Woods improved her record to 3-1-1 in goal as she recorded four saves in the match.
The Herd will travel to Buffalo to face the Bulls in a MAC contest on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
