HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall women?s soccer team drilled Central Michigan University, 3-1 Friday at Sam Hood Field. The Herd stepped up their game to improve their record to 6-6-1 overall and 3-4-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
?This is the first game all season where we have hit on all cylinders,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?If I had to give a game ball tonight it would go to Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, OH), but every one of our girls played well. The most important thing for us right now is to put a winning streak together.?
Marshall?s Kelly Posey (Manassas, VA) opened the scoring for the Herd in the 22nd minute off an assist from Ashley Schillig (New Albany, OH). The Herd struck again just before the half as freshman Jaime Gruber (Hudson, OH) took the rebound off the Chippewas? goalkeeper and knocked it in to put Marshall up 2-0 at the half.
Both teams were held scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, until Sarah Gupton (Richmond, IN) broke away to score another goal for the Herd at the 78:48 mark. This time Central Michigan was quick to respond as Emilie Villemonte paired with Stacy Downing to score the lone goal of the match for CMU less than a minute later.
Marshall dominated the match in nearly every statistical category, including outshooting CMU 25-11. MU goal keeper Sarah Barber (Cincinnati, OH) recorded five saves in the match.
The Herd will continue their homestand as they take on Eastern Michigan University in another crucial Mid-American Conference match at Sam Hood Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
