Marshall Drops Heartbreaker to Ball State
10/25/2002
MUNCIE, IND. -- Marshall?s women?s soccer team was left stunned after witnessing its three goal lead disappear and eventually dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Ball State Cardinals in Muncie on Friday.
Freshman Ashley Schillig scored all three Marshall goals to give the Herd a 3-0 lead. Schillig?s first goal came in the 25th minute, followed by two second half goals in the 47th and 53rd minutes.
Ball State came roaring back to score three goals to force overtime, highlighted by a Dee Nocero penalty kick in the 90th minute. Nocero took a shot off a pass from midfield to score the golden goal in the game?s 100th minute and drop Marshall?s record to 6-7-2 (3-5-2 MAC).
The Cardinal rally began when Kate Madalin scored goals in the 70th and 88th minutes to cut the deficit to one goal before Nocero worked her late match heroics.
Marshall assists were credited to Lindsey Jayjack, Ellerie Karl and Sarah Gupton. Karl and Gupton sent passes to Schillig that left her with one-on-one breakaways with the Ball State goalkeeper.
With the victory, Ball State (13-4-0, 9-3-0 MAC) secured a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference and a home match in the MAC Tournament?s quarterfinal round.
Marshall?s next match is on Sunday when the Herd will square off with the Miami RedHawks in Oxford, Ohio.
