HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University women?s soccer team put the pressure on the University of Toledo, but could not pull out the victory as they fell 2-1 to the Rockets in Toledo, Ohio on Sunday.
With the loss the Herd falls to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets improve their record to 4-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the league.
?I am really proud of our kids for stepping up and improving their level of play in the second half,? head coach Teresa Patterson said. ?We just dug a hole we couldn?t climb out of. Our team played fantastic soccer in the second half, but it was too little too late. The team goal now is to play 90 minutes of good soccer against Kent State on Friday.?
The Rockets drew first blood at 24:33 on Melissa Lesage?s goal. Kristen Friedman headed the ball to Brittany Lawrence who turned and dumped it to a streaking Lesage. Marshall?s goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, NY) got her hands on the ball, but was unable to stop it for the opening score. Toledo made the score 2-0 at 42:17 on a goal by Robin Davidson.
Marshall cut the lead in half at 55:57 of the second half on Ashley Schillig's unassisted goal. Schillig (New Albany, OH) won possession of the ball about 25-yards from the UT goal and turned to find herself all alone. She promptly drilled a hard, high shot that Toledo goalkeeper Elise Donovan was not able to react to quick enough for the score.
The Thundering Herd had several good attempts at the goal late, but Toledo held on to take the 2-1 win.
Toledo outshot Marshall, 13-10. MU?s Woods made five saves in the match and fell to 2-1-1 on the season.
Marshall will return to action Friday, October 11 at 5:00, taking on Kent State University in an important MAC contest for the Herd.
