Marshall Swimmers and Divers Fall to Wright State

11/8/2002

DAYTON, Ohio ? Despite a record setting performance by freshman Milla Kuurto, Marshall University?s women?s swimming and diving team was upended Friday by the Wright State Raiders 124-95.

Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) broke a Wright State Natatorium pool record in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 57.40, which was over one-half of a second better than the old record of 57.97.

?Milla swam an outstanding race,? said Marshall Head Coach Leonard Kraus. ?She did a good job of leading us and getting wins when we needed them.?

Kuurto was one of two individual double winners for Marshall, also swimming to a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.05).

Freshman Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) earned her first collegiate victories by sweeping the diving events. Mulholland won both the 3-meter and 1-meter contests, with scores of 218.85 and 237.83, respectively.

?I?m very proud of Casey,? diving coach Clifton Waterbury said, ?she?s worked hard and her potential for improvement is limitless.?

Wright State, the 2002 Horizon League champions, lost only four events over the course of the meet.

Thundering Herd swimmer Liisa Raty (Espoo, Finland) turned in another solid performance with two second place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.07) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.82). Raty also contributed to a second place 400-yard medley relay (4:06.02) along with Kuurto, Emily Moe (Rockford, Mich.) and Michele Knicely (Bridgeport, W. Va.).

Knicely secured second place in the 100-yard freestyle (57.19) and third place in the 50-yard freestyle (26.54), to help keep Marshall within striking distance of the Raiders.

?We swam a very talented and deep team tonight,? said Kraus, ?but 80 to 85 percent of our swims were season bests, so we are improving.?

Marshall (1-1) will get its first taste of Mid-American Conference competition on Saturday when they travel to Eastern Michigan to face the Eagles along with geographic rival Ohio University. The three-way meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
