HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marvin Black scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Marshall University to an 83-68 win over Western Carolina Friday in the Cam Henderson Center.
Black, a junior from Cleveland, Ohio, hit 10 of 11 shots from the floor en route to posting his second consecutive double-double. The 6-7 forward recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds at Morehead State on Tuesday night.
Three other Thundering Herd players reach double-digits in scoring. Senior Monty Wright posted 11 points, while sophomores Ronny Dawn and David Anderson added 10 points each. Junior standout Ronald Blackshear, suffering from a slight illness, was limited to a season low four points. He did however contribute four assists in 25 minutes of action.
Marshall (5-2, 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference) shot 50% from the field (25-50) and 41.2% from three-point range (7-17), while limiting Western Carolina (3-5) to 38.3% shooting (23-60) and a dismal 18.8% from three-point range (3-16).
The Thundering Herd was also able to limit Western Carolina standout Kevin Martin. Martin, who entered the game among the nation?s scoring leaders, got into foul trouble early and managed only 11 points before fouling out after only 14 minutes of action.
The Catamounts were led by Alex Osipovitch?s 18 points and nine rebounds. Rans Brempong added 12 for WCU.
Both teams struggled to find consistency and were whistled for a combined 48 fouls. Marshall recorded 26 personal fouls and Western Carolina tallied 22.
Marshall will now have a few days off for the Christmas break before returning to action on December 28th at the University of Massachussetts. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and the contest will be televised by the Thundering Herd/ISP Network (WSAZ in the Huntington area.)
