Marshall University?s men?s basketball team will open Mid-American Conference play in the new 9,100-seat Convocation Center at Northern Illinois University Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Due to the time conflict with the Mid-American Conference Football Championship, the basketball game will only be broadcast on 92.7 FM in the Huntington area and on WVOW 1290 AM and 101.9 FM in Logan, W.Va., with Vince Payne and Robert Harper handiling play-by-play and color analyst duties.
The Thundering Herd will be looking to rebound after a 75-56 loss at Rutgers on Monday night, while Northern is coming off of a 77-62 win over Drake on Wednesday night at home. NIU is 3-3 on the young season with losses at Wisconsin (84-56), to DePaul (63-48) and at Valparaiso (78-67). The Huskies have downed Winthrop (56-50) and Loyola-Chicago (69-67), in addition to Drake.
Northern Illinois is led by All-MAC candidate Marcus Smallwood. The 6-6 junior is averaging 13.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Huskies are also enjoying their first season in their brand new $35.8-million Convocation Center.
