Softball Earns First Two Wins On Young Season

2/22/2002

Athens, Ga.-The Marshall University softball team (2-5) picked up its first two wins of the season today as the team competed in the University of Georgia Bulldog Classic. The Herd defeated Appalachain State University 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament and then returned to the field to collect its second win of the season 3-2 over East Tennessee University.

?It wasn?t always pretty today,? head coach Shonda Stanton said. ?I was really proud of the way the girls fought back and played hard.?

In the first contest the Herd came out a little slow as they allowed Appalachain State(1-2) to go ahead in the bottom of the second inning and did not retaliate to score a run until the top of the seventh inning. Marshall?s bats awoke on an RBI double by Dana Black (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) that scored De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.). The Herd continued their streak into extra innings as Nikki Wilcox singled, stole second and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Drake. The Herd held the Mountaineers in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the win 2-1.

Black led the Herd on offense going 2 for 3 at the plate. Sophomore Seirra Davenport (1-0) received the win on the mound.

Against East Tennessee State (0-5) the Thundering Herd jumped out in front early scoring a run in the top of the 1st inning. Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Drake. Marshall struck for another score in the bottom of the third inning asVanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) stroked a double that scored Drake.

East Tennessee fought back in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs to tie the game at two. The bats of the Thundering Herd would not remain silent for long as they took back the lead in the bottom of the inning off of a home run by sophomore pitcher Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.). The Herd went on to win to defeat the Bucaneers 3-2. Chamberlain (1-2) went the distance on the mound for the Herd giving up only six hits.

Marshall returns to action tomorrow to face East Tennessee State at noon and the host University of Georgia at 4:00 pm.
