Softball Falls in Bulldog Classic

2/23/2002

Athens, Ga.-The Marshall University softball team (2-7) fell to East Tennessee State University 6-3 and to the University of Georgia 6-1 in the second day of the University of Georgia Bulldog Classic.

Against East Tennessee State (1-6) the Thundering Herd jumped out to the lead early as they struck for a run in the top of the 1st inning. Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later came around to score when De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) laced a single down the left field line.

East Tennessee came out with their bats swinging in the bottom half of the inning. The Herd defense held strong, allowing only one run to score after the bases were loaded with one out. However, the Buccaneers continued their rally in the bottom of the 2nd inning as they struck for three runs.

The Herd threatened in the third, loading the bases, but failed to score again until the fifth inning. Corrigan again scored on a hit by Drake, this time a double to the gap in right center field.

The Buccaneers tacked on two more runs in the 6th, but the Herd would not die as they came back to score a run in the bottom of the 7th. Marshall couldn?t pull off the come from behind victory as they fell 6-3.

In the second game of the afternoon Marshall faced off against the #23 ranked Bulldogs of the University of Georgia (18-0) and jumped out to a 1-0 lead early. Once again Corrigan came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Drake in the top of the first inning.

Marshall held the lead until the Bulldogs pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Georgia strung a pair of hits together to add two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the victory 6-1.
