Nielson Throws No Hitter as Softball Defeats Applachian State

Athens, Ga.-The Marshall University softball team (3-7) returned to the Women?s Athletic Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia for the final day of competition in the Bulldog Classic. The Herd defeated Applachian State University 4-2 in the first contest of the day. Freshman hurler Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) threw a no hitter to lead Marshall to victory.

?I felt really good coming out today,? Nielson said. ?I was confident because I knew my defense was behind me.?

The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Marshall?s Dana Black (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) knocked in two runs on a laser hit down the left field line. Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) singled in the fifth to drive in two more runs and put the Herd up 4-0.

The Mountaineers (1-6) were able to push a couple of runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but were not able to produce a hit.

Marshall?s bats were also hot as they collected 10 hits on the game. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) led the Herd on offense going 3 for 3, Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) went 2 for 3 and De?Shaun Drake was 2 for 3.

The Herd returns to action this afternoon as they face off against #23 ranked Universtiy of Georgia Bulldogs at 2:00 pm.
