Deacons Grab Win From Herd Tennis Team

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The 14th-ranked Demon Deacon women's tennis team defeated 71st-ranked Marshall 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. Marshall slipped to 0-3 on the season.
Wake Forest got off to a fast start by winning all three doubles matches, The match was started off by an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot by Bea Belik and Janet Bergman. The nation's third-ranked duo defeated Anna Mitina (senior/Sochi, Russia) and Alice Sukner (sophomore/Pittsburgh, Pa.). Maren Haus and Aimee Smith won at the No. 2 position 8-2 over Jessica Johnson (sophomore/Swickley, Pa.) and Danielle Hock (freshman/England). Finally, at the No. 3 spot, Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz defeated Ashley Kroh (freshman/Louisville, Ky.) and Megan Skalsky (sophomore/East Lansing, Mich.) 8-3.
The Deacons won five of the six singles matches. Four of those victories came in straight sets, including one by Bielik, the nation's top-ranked singles player. She claimed the No.1 position with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Johnson. Bergman defeated Mitina 4-6,7-5,6-4 at No. 2 singles. Martzolf defeated Lille Nzudi (freshman/Camaroon) 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Schwartz defeated Joelle Good (freshman/Switzerland) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 and Proctor defeated Hock 6-4, 6-0.
Marshall's only point of the afternoon came at the No. 3 position where Alice Sukner upset 67th-ranked Haus.
The Thundering Herd will return to action next weekend when they host Wright State and Morehead State Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville. The matches are slated for 10 am and 1 pm respectively.
