Cold Shooting Dooms Herd Women
2/9/2002
Huntington, W.Va.- The Marshall University women?s basketball team (6-16, 2-9 MAC) dropped a 57-44 decision to the Eastern Michigan Eagles (13-9, 6-5 MAC) Saturday afternoon in the Henderson Center. The visitors from Ypisilanti took advantage of a cold shooting Marshall team to come away with the victory.
?Today, we played very well on the defensive end. It probably was one of our best defensive efforts,? said Marshall Royce Chadwick. ?But, we couldn?t get some good looks to go in the basket. These last two games were two of our better performances of the year. We made good passes and were extremely hard to box out. But, we?re in a shooting slump right now, and we just have to keep shooting to get ourselves out of it.?
With the game tied at 14 with just over ten minutes to play in the first half, Marshall?s shooting woes began. For the next ten minutes, the Herd could manage only two points, and at the break, MU trailed the Eagles 26-16. The scoreless drought continued at the start of the second half, as EMU scored seven unanswered points to push the lead to 17, 33-16. Marshall never recovered from the Eastern Michigan run, getting no closer than 11 points the rest of the way. For the game, MU shot 26.2% from the floor (16-for-61)
Marshall was led by Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.), who scored 13 points and had seven steals, a new career high. Andrea Fitzgerald (Memphis, Ten.) was the only other Marshall player in double figures with 11.
Eastern Michigan had four players in double-figures, including Shani Charles, who led the Eagles with 15 points. Kris Lindsey and Kris Kachaturoff both added 12 points, while Abby Wiseman chipped in 10.
The Herd hit the road for another MAC contest this Wednesday at the University at Buffalo. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
