ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- The Marshall University softball team kicked off its 2002 season at the University of Central Florida Triple Crown Sports Tournament.

The Thundering Herd got off to a rough start in their first game, falling to the host University of Central Florida 9-1. Marshall was then defeated by the University of Mississippi 3-1 in a close contest in the second game of the evening.

?Obviously we didn?t get our season off to the kind of start we had hoped, but we are confident that all three facets of the game will come together,? head coach Shonda Stanton said.

Against Central Florida (3-3) Marshall kicked off the season scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but couldn?t get things rolling offensively after that.

Nichole Corrigan (Corona, CA) drew a walk to start the game. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) then bunted Corrigan to second and Corrigan scored on a pair of Knight errors. Marshall managed only one hit, a double by Corrigan, in the final four innings of the mercy-rule game.

Sophomore Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, WA) started on the mound for the Herd and received the loss. She gave up seven hits, struck out two batters and walked four.

In the night cap, Marshall faced off against Ole Miss (4-0) in a defensive struggle. Ole Miss mustered only five hits against Marshall?s freshman hurler Randi Nielson (Tucson, AZ), but one of those was a two-run blast over the left field fence by Becky Testin to give the Rebels a 3-0 advantage in the fifth inning.

Marshall managed to put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning on a pair of singles by Corrigan and Davenport, but couldn?t finish the rally.

The Thundering Herd continues tournament play tomorrow as they face the University of Georgia at 2:00 p.m. and Stetson University at 4:30 p.m.
